Louis-Hector de Callière's Portrait

Louis-Hector de Callire was born in Normandy on November 12, 1648. He was appointed Governor of Montral in 1684 and waged a number of military campaigns against the English and Iroquois. Callire succeeded Louis de Buade Comte de Frontenac as Governor General of New France in 1699. He held this position until his death in Québec in May of 1703. Callire played a key role in consolidating the French presence in North America. He hosted the 1701 Great Peace of Montral, a summit to conclude a peace between the French, their Native allies and the Five Iroquois Nations. Under the treaty, the Iroquois agreed to remain neutral in the event of a war between France and England.
